Video of the Day
Make a groundhog costume by starting with a mask. You can use a paper plate that has been painted brown, or a round piece of brown construction paper for the face. Choose a size large enough to cover most of your face and hair.
Draw the eyes, nose and mouth on the face, and then use scissors to cut the holes. Note that the mouth should draw upwards at the top of the center to meet with the nose. Center the eyes and make them round so that you will be able to see clearly once you put on the mask.
Cut two smaller circles from construction paper to form the eyes for your groundhog costume. Make them small enough so that you will not be mistaken for a mouse. You may want to use a slighter darker brown or even black paper to match the colors of a real groundhog.
Use pink construction paper to make the nose for your groundhog costume. Place the small pink circle at the very top of the mouth hole, and center the nose so that it is connected to the mouth.
Use brown pieces of string, yarn or pipe cleaners to make the whiskers. Attach the whiskers around the nose of the mask with glue.
Cut small holes into the sides of the mask and tie a piece of string or yarn to each hole. This is how you will tie the mask around your head.
Fashion a suit from a variety of materials, including faux fur or even a brown sweatshirt and pants. Be creative, yet make sure you will be comfortable throughout the celebration.
Create a tail for your costume by using an additional piece of brown fabric. Keep the tail relatively small and compact, as it is on an actual groundhog.
