Making an explorer hat out of newspaper is a simple and fun craft for small children. It requires few supplies and can be a useful activity for Columbus Day, Halloween or just general play. It is also an environmentally friendly craft, since it is recycling old newspapers that may be laying around. The outfit can be complemented with a beige shirt, shorts and a telescope made out of a paper towel roll.
Things You'll Need
- 1/2 sheet newspaper
- Construction paper (optional)
- Glue (optional)
- Markers (optional)
Video of the Day
Fold the sheet of newspaper in half. Sunday comics can make for a bright, colorful explorer hat.
Place the newspaper in front of you so the folded side is on top. Fold down the top corners to turn the newspaper into a triangle.
Locate the two flaps on the bottom of the triangle. Fold one of them up about 1 inch.
Flip the hat over. Fold up the other flap so it is even with the other side. This creates a brim for the explorer hat. Use a few pieces of tape to secure the flaps.
Decorate the hat as desired. Cut out shapes or designs of construction paper and glue them to the hat. The hat can also be colored with markers.
