Yin-Yang is part of the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism. It is used to explain how all opposites in life are actually connected and dependent on one another. The Yin-Yang philosophy continues to endure in all aspects of Chinese life, including traditional Chinese medicine. The Yin-Yang has also become a common symbol in popular culture throughout the West, used in such items as T-shirts and bumper stickers. You can easily draw your own Yin-Yang symbol using basic drawing tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil Compass
  • Paper
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Black marker

Determine what size you want your Yin-Yang to be. Adjust your compass to make the circle match that size.

Make a circle on the paper with your pencil compass.

Measure the diameter of your completed circle with the ruler. Divide the circle in half. Draw a dividing line through the center with your pencil.

Adjust your compass so that it is now half the diameter of the center line. Draw a circle on the center line. Its top should be touching the first circle.

Draw a second circle with the same diameter underneath the previous circle. Now you should have a sort of figure eight within the original circle.

Erase the line dividing the circle.

Adjust your compass so that it is now approximately one-fourth the size of the two circles you have just drawn. Draw smaller circles inside the larger circles you have just completed.

Darken the lower smaller circle with your black marker.

Erase the larger upper circle’s left side and do the same for the right side of the lower larger circle. You should be left with a swirl shape acting as the divider for the Yin-Yang symbol.

Darken the left side of the Yin-Yang with your black marker.
