If you have a house with doors that are higher than ground level, creating a concrete stoop not only will enhance the house's visual appeal, but will also make it safer for those entering or exiting your home. Concrete is a common material used to build outdoor stoops because it is a resilient material that will stand the test of time.

- Rebar wire or mesh
Install a sheet of metal flashing below the door. The flashing should extend the full width of your stoop. This will prevent water from seeping between the stoop and the house.
Compact the soil at the base of the door with a vibrating plate compactor. It is very important that the surface beneath your stoop be level and firmly compacted; otherwise your stoop may not be level and plumb.
Place a thin layer of crushed gravel on top of the leveled dirt. The gravel should cover the entire area where the stoop will be placed. This gravel will allow water to drain underneath the step and will help prevent the stoop from sinking into the ground over time.
Space rebar chairs evenly over the gravel surface to support your mesh or rebar wire. Lay the rebar over the chair grid and tie the pieces of rebar with metal wire at any point where they cross--this will reinforce the rebar.
Build a form for your stoop using lengths of wood held together by nails. Make sure the corners of your form meet at 90-degree angles. If you are building a large stoop, install side reinforcements to help support the weight of the wet concrete.
Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer’s instructions and pour it into the wooden form. Fill the form to the top and level with a trowel.
Bang the sides of the form with your trowel to ensure that no air bubbles have formed in the concrete.
Allow the concrete to dry thoroughly and then disassemble the wooden frame to reveal your finished stoop.
