Whether you've run out of sour cream or are looking for a healthier or cheaper alternative, there are plenty of other options that can substitute for the taste and texture of sour cream whether you're cooking, baking or just want a low-fat replacement.

Plain Non-fat Yogurt

Plain, non-fat yogurt can replace sour cream in dips, dressings or as a garnish. For a thicker texture, strain the yogurt in cheesecloth or use plain Greek yogurt.

Cottage Cheese

To replace one cup of sour cream in a recipe, blend together one cup of cottage cheese and two tablespoons each of lemon juice and milk.

Creme Fraiche

creme fraiche has a similar texture and consistency to sour cream, and it will not curdle when it is boiled. Substitute creme fraiche for sour cream in sauces, dips, dressings or desserts.

Buttermilk

Substitute one cup buttermilk for one cup of sour cream, or for a thicker consistency, combine seven-eighths cup buttermilk with three tablespoons butter or margarine.
