Automate Social Media and Enjoy the Summer

eHow Tech Blog

Summer is officially in full swing, which, I hope, means long sunny days, trips to the beach, fruity drinks, and…Twitter updates?  Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks have become all-consuming in our lives, but being enslaved to our updates, tweets and posts doesn’t exactly make for a relaxing summer.

So perhaps it’s time for sunscreen, lemonade, and reassessing your social media strategy. With the help of some handy tools, you can stay active on your social networks without being tied to your phone or computer. There are many apps and services now that allow you to automate your feeds and updates, and if used properly, can be a great way to maintain your presence while you’re working on your tan.

Here are a few to check out:

Postcron is an app that lets you automate your posts to your Facebook profile, pages, Twitter or LinkedIn. You simply create the content you want to post, specify when you want to post it and you’re done.

Smart Twitter for Pages lets you automatically publish updates from your Twitter page onto your Facebook page. Just keep in mind that it won’t republish @ replies, hashtags or retweets.

Finally, TweetDeck and Hootsuite are probably the two most popular platforms for managing your busy social media lives on Twitter. Both offer the ability to automate tweets and updates, the primary difference being that Hootsuite is web-based while TweetDeck is a desktop application (making it less popular with corporate users who often aren’t allowed to download apps on their own). Both offer the ability to publish to Facebook pages as well.

The most important thing to keep in mind with scheduled updates is that you don’t want it to seem like you’re out to lunch (even though you are).  So do post the occasional shout-out to friends, great articles from websites you like, and other altruistic tweets, so that it doesn’t look like you’ve left robots in charge of your social media channels.

And then also schedule some thoughtful but “evergreen” posts, and then sit back, relax, and let all that automation do the work for you.  Happy summer!
