Finished Faux Fur Pom-Pom Beanie DIY

Those ball-shaped embellishments called pompoms can add a touch of whimsy to practically any surface. They’re typically associated with children’s crafts, but who says the rest of us can’t join in on the fun?

This tutorial will show you how to add a faux-fur pompom to a basic beanie — perfect for staying stylishly warm during the cooler months. The best part? You can make the pompom detachable, giving you a 2-in-1 accessory.

Supplies for the Faux Fur Pom Pom Beanie project

Fabric scissors
Sewing needle and thread
Pin back (optional)
Strong craft glue (Such as E6000)
Faux fur fabric (at least 5 inches x 5 inches/ 12.7 centimeters x 12.7 centimeters)

Faux fur circle and fabric scissors

1. Trim the faux fur into a circle measuring about 4.5 inches (11.43 centimeters) in diameter. Don’t worry about trying to get it perfect; this pompom technique is very forgiving!

Threading a needle

2. Prepare the needle with a 50-inch (127 centimeter) strand of thread. Let the needle fall to the middle of the thread and tie a double knot at the end.

4. Insert the needle back through the fabric, creating a loose stitch about 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) long. Reinsert the needle about 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) from the first stitch.
