Mother’s Day DIY: Gratitude Journal

eHow Mom Blog RSS

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching (Sunday, May 12)…are you ready? Today we’ve got a quick idea that Mom’s sure to love. In fact, this DIY gratitude journal is scientifically proven to make her happier. Read on for the details.

To start, pick up a basic journal (like a Moleskine) and get the kids to decorate the cover however they please. We decided to work with paints and stencils.

We found an adhesive with a pretty pattern and stuck it across the cover.

Next, we applied all-purpose craft paint by blotting over the stencil with a sponge.

Finally, we used a few letter stencils to spell out “Mom” across the bottom.

Once the cover was done, it was time to add the little touches that will make this journal really special.

Inside we used two strips of washi tape on each page to serve as a date line for each journal entry. On the first page, we wrote a personal message to Mom telling her how writing down what she’s grateful each day can actually make her happier. Of course, we included a few words covering all the reasons we’re grateful for her too.

The final touch was to pepper photos of sweet moments with the kids throughout the journal.

The idea is for Mom to take two minutes each night to record what she’s grateful for from the day. The habit really has been shown to result in increased happiness. And on occasion she’ll turn to a page with a special memory to brighten her day.
