I love being bilingual. Being able to communicate in multiple languages allows me to express myself more creatively. While sometimes my Spanish speaking skills stay dormant until someone who uses the accelerated Cuban version is near, I really do love engaging in conversations with close friends and family in Spanish. This is especially true on Mother’s Day, or El Día de la Madre, when we celebrate as a family.
Speaking Spanish gives bicultural Latinas the opportunity to connect with older generations, feel whole in our heritage and enjoy a language that perhaps is no longer dominant in our day-to-day lives, but part of our identities. Celebrating our mothers is a perfect opportunity to freshen up our language skills and express to our mamás how much we appreciate them.
