Spreading Our Urban Roots: A 17Apart Welcome!

eHow Home Blog

Hi there—we’re Mary and Tim Vidra, authors of the blog 17Apart, and couldn’t be more thrilled at this welcome into the eHow community. To give you a little background, we’re a creative (and newly married) couple living and working in our hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Both do-it-yourselfers by nature, we’re always looking for ways to put a creative spin on a new project and explore what sustainable living means to us.

Our collaborative blog was born shortly after we moved in together and wanted a central place to share all the projects we tackle hand in hand. Tim, being the best with words, came up with the blog’s name, 17Apart, as a spin off of our 17 year age difference.

Outside of the blog, Tim has a deep-rooted passion for all things food related. Just this year he was able to quit his corporate day job of 18+ years to pursue his passion for food writing, blogging, photography and food styling.

You’ll usually find me buried deep in the depths of Etsy where I work as a Merchandising Specialist.

My affinity for Etsy developed 8 years ago when I first launched a jewelry shop on the site and has only grown over the years. I’m passionate about helping independent businesses creatively leverage their brands and feel lucky to be able to work with such a creative group of peers and thriving community of shop owners across the globe on a daily basis.

We live in a 100+ year old railroad style home in the city with a four-legged furry family member, our weimaraner, Basil. He likes to keep us on our toes while we work to update and personalize our space — and like most pet owners, we like to spoil him rotten. We enjoy concocting new and different dog treat recipes using natural ingredients as a small part of that spoiling regimen. You’ll find Basil sniffing around the background of most projects we’re tackling, and we like to think he’s the true star of the blog.

We’re avid amatuer gardeners, love the idea of edible landscaping and always seem to be toying with new solutions for vertical growing space or ways to make the most of the tight space in our small city enclosure.

We also share an enthusiasm for the thrill of the hunt. You’ll find us meandering through flea markets, antique shops or checking out an estate sale, invariably on the hunt for that next great find. We love to breathe new life into vintage finds through repurposing and even maintain a small collection of some of our favorite finds in our vintage Etsy shop.

Through blogging we’ve developed a wonderful network of new friends and are so excited to be welcomed into the eHow community. We’re excited to be sharing DIY projects and simple tips for making your home feel “uniquely you,” hoping to inspire your own explorations in loving your surroundings.
