When it comes to designing with rugs most of my clients hit a virtual roadblock. Understandably so, a rug can completely change the look of a room, making it a pretty powerful purchase. As with any other design decision, you have to decide what style you’re trying to achieve before you even head to your local home goods store. So ask yourself the following questions to help you decide which rug will look and function best in your home:
- Is my style traditional, contemporary or transitional?
- What textures do I like when it comes to flooring? Plush, low pile, woven, shag?
- What size rug do I need for the space?
- Who or what will be traipsing across the rug? Toddlers, animals, teens?
I recently went shopping for a new rug to fit within my sectional sofa “free space” (the space in front of the sofa).
TIP: Assess where the traffic patterns are in the room. This will help with color choice, as highly trafficked areas will require a rug in a dirt disguising shade.
I brought home two choices because the only way to really choose a rug is to roll it out and put it into the space! Even with huge rugs, most high-end rug dealers will bring the rugs to your home to see how they look in your light and with your furniture before you purchase them.
TIP: Be sure to set the stage properly so you can make the best decision. As seen above, I added pillows in complimentary colors to tie the rugs into the room. Take the time and effort to stage each rug choice so you get a real idea of how it will look in the room.
Ultimately, family members will weigh in and make their choices very clear… So the shag rug it is!!
