Home Prep: Fall Checklist

eHow Home Blog

With cooler temps heading our way, fall is the perfect time to wrap up last minute around-the-house duties to get your home in top shape for the winter months. Just a few simple tasks will not only keep your house protected against the elements, but can save you a pretty penny if you can knock out some of the work yourself.

Insulate your space. Caulking windows, ensuring door seals are snug and adding a little extra insulation under your house and in the attic will help keep the heat in and your bills down.

Have your furnace serviced. Nothing is worse than being without heat when snow is falling, so do yourself a favor and have a pro out to make sure your furnace is primed and ready for the demands of the cold.

Clean gutters are happy gutters. Leaves and other debris can trap water in your gutters and, should the temperatures drop below freezing, trapped water turned ice can damage your gutters.

Have your chimney inspected and cleaned before you fire up those logs, especially if it’s been a few years since you’ve used your fireplace.

With just a few extra quick fixes added to your fall checklist, you can sail smoothly through the chilly winter months and slide on into a sunny spring.
