November is officially upon us and you know what that means … no, not playing in the leaves, though there will be plenty of time for that later. First, we have some serious home needs to address before we’re hit with colder weather. No worries if you’re not sure where to start, we here at eHow have a checklist prepared to help you knock out home projects this fall.
Clean out gutters and downspouts. A buildup of leaves could lead to some serious roof damage, so be sure to empty all gutters and downspouts of fall foliage. While you’re at it, go ahead and give your roof a good sweep, too.
Service your heating system. Before kicking your household heat into high gear, call in a professional to service your unit. Making sure your furnace is in tip-top shape will save you a lot of trouble (and a few chilly nights) when your unit decides to kick the bucket.
Fill any cracks around your home, especially around doors and windows. A little caulking goes a long way when it comes to keeping heat right where you want it — inside your home. Your wallet will thank you.
Protect your pipes. Prepare your pipes for the winter months and avoid an unexpected (and costly) fix. There are a number of options for insulating pipes, but regardless of what you decide to do, two rules hold true: Keep exposed pipes warm AND dry.
Once you’ve knocked out your fall around-the-house checklist, you deserve a little fun. Invest in a good rake, head outside with the kids and dive into a massive pile of leaves.
