Enjoy Coffee for Two With DIY Mug Appliqués and Conversation Heart Stirrers

eHow Home Blog

Are you looking forward to a quiet evening in with your Valentine (or best bud!) this year? Make the moment extra special with these two DIY crafts — an easy DIY heart appliqué to adorn your mugs and cute homemade stirrers complete with conversation heart-inspired toppers. Here’s how.

Things You’ll Need

  • Clear mugs
  • Card stock
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive-backed vinyl
  • Pen
  • Glass cleaner
  • microfiber cloth
  • Oil-paint marker for glass (optional)
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Felt
  • Hot glue
  • Fine-tipped marker

Begin by purchasing a pair of clear glass coffee mugs (or pull them out of the cupboard if you already have some on hand). You’ll need the type of mug that has a completely flat surface on the bottom for this project. Then, download and print the printable heart template onto sturdy 8.5-by-11 inch card stock.

Cut out the template and then place it on top of a piece of adhesive-backed vinyl — bonus points for using a Valentine’s Day color palette! I used a soft blush pink for my appliqués. Trace the outline of your heart template onto the vinyl twice using a pen, and then cut the shapes out.

Wipe down the exterior bottom of your glass mugs with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel to remove all fingerprints and dust. Then, peel away the paper backing from the vinyl hearts and press them into place on each mug. Now, when you and your Valentine enjoy your cups of Joe (or tea), you’ll see a pretty pink heart with each sip.

Note: These types of vinyl peel-and-stick appliqués aren’t permanent but should last through several uses as long as you hand-wash the mugs and are careful not to get the vinyl wet. For a more long-lasting effect, trace the template right on the mug using an oil-based paint marker made for glass.

Now for the stirrers. For these, you’ll need cardboard or plastic lollipop sticks (purchased from the baking section of your local grocery or craft store), candy-colored felt, scissors, hot glue, a felt marker and the same heart template that you used for the appliqués.

Begin by cutting the lollipop sticks to size—I cut mine in half to suit the size of my mugs (you’ll want yours to be slightly taller than the height of your mugs). Then, trace the cut card stock heart template twice onto each color of felt.

Cut each heart out and then write on conversation heart phrases using a fine-tipped felt marker — things like “HUG ME,” “BE MINE” and “CUTIE.” After that, squeeze a line of hot glue onto each inside face of the hearts. Press the two hearts together over the end of a lollipop stick, and hold in place for 30 seconds, taking care not to let your skin touch the hot glue. Finish by trimming away any uneven felt edges or excess hot glue that may have seeped out the sides.

Repeat the steps across all of the lollipop sticks.
