Turning a blank canvas of a room into festive space to celebrate is one of my favorite home décor challenges. Nothing completes the task as quickly as a good strand of garland.
This bright and colorful garland filled with felt strips is the perfect decoration to have on hand for a number of occasions. Create it once and pull it out again and again for showers, birthdays and general revelry. The process is simple, and the garland can be made with the exact color combination your house needs to gussy it up for a party.
To make this garland you will need:
-Felt in various colors
-Needle and thread
Start by cutting the felt into small strips. I found it easiest to fold each piece of felt in half vertically and then cut in toward the center. The garland can be made with any height variation of felt, but I found about a 4-inch-by-1/2-inch strip to be my favorite look.
After all the felt is cut, take the needle and thread and begin hand sewing the felt strips together. Simply stitch through each strip leaving about 1/4 inch between each of the strips to combine.
After the basic garland is complete, you can accessorize it to fit the occasion. Simple white adhesive letters instantly turn the garland into a perfect birthday backdrop. To do this, cut felt strips about 1 inch wide, and gently place adhesives on the strips before sewing onto the garland.
The garland can be made as long or short as you like. Hanging on a wall it instantly brightens up a room — and I can imagine loving it hanging down from the ceiling as well!
