If you’re looking for a green gift idea, you might want to consider purchasing a bay laurel tree. You can find them in 1 gallon pots for around $10 at some nurseries (call ahead, I had to visit several nurseries to find one).
They make a unique and thoughtful gift for friends who like to cook. Many home chefs likely have a jar of bay leaves in their spice cabinets, but having a tree on hand provides the fresh flavor of the bay leaf without the need to stock up on those spice jars. Not only will the recipient save on packaging and enjoy the flavor of a fresh leaf, they will make the world and their home a little greener by planting a tree.
As an added bonus, you can use the leaves as decoration. Instead of purchasing wrapping paper, I use paper from grocery bags (collected from all those times I forgot to bring our cloth bags) to wrap gifts. Bay leaf sprigs serve as a much greener alternative to plastic bows and ribbons. This simple gift wrapping approach will be a big hit during the holidays this year with all my aunties who love to cook!
