Since it’s too hot to layer t-shirts this time of year, you can bring some style to a plain shirt simply by embellishing the neckline with a t-shirt yarn design. It’s super easy to do and you can get as creative as you’d like.
Start with a plain t-shirt with a simple neckline.
Then, use a second t-shirt to create the yarn. It could be a similar color or a contrasting color depending on what look you are going for. Lay it out flat and cut several one inch strips. I use my rotary cutter to get nice straight lines. But don’t fret if you don’t have one, you could mark it with a straight edge and use scissors to cut it instead. Cut off the side seams.
Next hold onto each end of the strip and pull. This will cause the fabric to roll up into itself. It creates nice t-shirt yarn that can be used in much the same way as regular yarn. Today we are creating a design on the front of our t shirt with it.
Experiment with your design by laying it out on the front of your t shirt to see what you like the best.
You could pin it in place if you like, but I just started to sew and moved the yarn around as I sewed it down along the neckline.
As you sew, you will need to lift your presser foot up and down to manipulate the t-shirt and turn sharp corners. Be careful to only be sewing on the front of your t-shirt. Check once and awhile to make sure the back of the shirt is out of the way.
When you get to the end of one piece of the t-shirt yarn, simply tuck the end of the next piece inside the end of the other and continue sewing.
Keep sewing until you get your desired look. It can be fancy or simple, geometric or flowery. You could even continue around to the back of the shirt if you’d like to.
