When making homemade holiday gifts for friends and family, it is fitting to also make your own gift bags. They are inexpensive to make, and contrasting stitching adds a lively accent of color.
Things You’ll Need
- Roll of paper
- Sewing machine
First cut out four large rectangles for the front and back, four medium rectangles for the sides and two small rectangles for the handles. The size of the rectangles will depend on the size of the gift bag you want. I cut mine to be 13 by 8 inches, 13 by 5 inches and 13 by 2 inches.
Start by folding the handle pieces in thirds. Sew down the length of the folded handles with a large zigzag stitch. Next, sew the tops of the two front panels together with the handle 1 1/2 inches from each side. Continue with the two back panels and the second handle.
Sew the tops of the two side panel pieces together. Then, sew each side panel to the front panel of the bag.
Next, sew on the back panel.
When the side panels have been sewn onto the front and back panels, fold in the side panels.
Sew the bottom of the bag shut.
Open the bag and make a flat bottom. Secure with glue, if necessary.
You can make these gift bags using kraft paper, glitter paper, wrapping paper, scrapbooking paper and even pages from magazines. Rather than making a paper handle, you can also use twine or ribbon for the handle. To decorate the bags, add chalkboard labels or stencil polka dots on them.
