Whirlpool Duet Pedestal Installation

Save

The Whirlpool Duet laundry pair has gained an almost iconic status, not just for its durability and innovation, but also for its flexibility. Both the Duet and Duet Sport washers and dryers can be installed side-by-side, stacked on top of each other or conveniently elevated on specially designed pedestals. These pedestals provide added storage for laundry supplies and are quite easy to install.

Benefits of Duet Pedestals

  • The primary benefit of pedestals for the Duet washer and dryer is that they raise the appliances 10 to 15 inches off the floor, making it easier to load and unload. For those who may not be so young and fit anymore, the lessened strain on the back from bending is essential.

The added weight of the pedestal also helps anchor the machines and helps minimize the infamous "washer walk" that has annoyed many a homemaker over the years.

In addition, the drawers that slide out from the pedestals provide an out-of-the-way space to store bottles of laundry detergent, bleach and fabric softener. Many also use this space for pet supplies, since its location in a mud room or laundry room is convenient for accessing bags of dog food or leashes for daily walks around the neighborhood.

Proper installation

  • If you purchase the pedestals along with a new Duet pair, most delivery personnel will install them along with the machines to ensure proper operation. If, however, you purchase the pedestals separately and need to install them yourself, there are a few important considerations.

Both the washer and dryer need to be disconnected from water and power sources before attaching them to the pedestals. Simply remove the plugs from the wall outlets, turn off the valve for both the hot and cold water supplies and carefully remove the hoses from the back of the washer.

Place a sheet of cardboard to protect both the floor and the Duet pair from scratching before carefully tipping the washer and dryer on their backs. The leveling feet for both machines and the drawers for the pedestals must be removed prior to installing the pedestals. The pedestals come with their own set of leveling feet, and these will be used to properly balance the machines as needed.

The pedestal will come with four hex screws. Take two of these and screw them into the two lower holes--closest to the rear of the machine, leaving about 3/8 inch of space. The pedestal will have two keyholes in the rear that need to be slid over these partially installed hex screws. Then lift the front of the pedestal so it's flush with the bottom of the machine, and insert the other two screws in the front holes of the washer or dryer. Tighten all four screws completely.

Tip the washer or dryer back to an upright position. Set a level atop the machine and adjust the four legs on the pedestal until the machine sits even and balanced. When you are satisfied, tighten the four lock nuts atop the legs against the bottom of the pedestals. Reinsert the drawers and then reattach the power and water supplies to the washer and dryer.

Troubleshooting

  • If the Duet washer or dryer should tend to wobble, double-check that the leveling legs and their lock nuts are tightened properly. If the machines slide slightly back and forth on the pedestals, pull the drawers out and retighten the four hex screws near the corners.
