How Do I Match Socks to Pants?
Socks are an important part of your outfit and help your outfit appear well-coordinated. To the extent that the color of your socks peeks out when you walk or sit down, you want your socks to tie together with your pants and shoes. Given the many types and styles of socks, how do you know how to choose the right socks to wear?
-
Color
-
Color is probably the most important factor to consider when choosing socks. Select socks that coordinate with your slacks and shoes so your sock and pant transition looks understated and fluid. Most men's shoes are either black, burgundy or brown, but men usually have slacks in more colors. Select socks that match the color of your slacks but coordinate with your shoes. You can choose a solid or patterned sock, depending on your taste. If your socks are exposed when you sit down or walk, an observer's eye naturally follows the socks to the slacks. Do not wear light or white socks with dark slacks because the contrast will ruin the effect of your outfit and be starkly noticeable.
Comfort and Sock Length
-
Socks come in varied lengths and sizes. Generally, socks are available calf length, midcalf length, or over-the-calf length. Choose socks that feel comfortable and do not bag. You do not want to be constantly pulling up baggy socks when you are at a business meeting. Ensure that the socks you choose are sized properly so they sit high enough on your leg. When you sit down, the color of the sock should be exposed as opposed to your skin. When purchasing socks, buy the right size. Sock packaging will reveal what size shoe the socks fit.
Fabric Weight
-
Every year, you probably switch your closet to different seasonal clothes. Socks, similar to other clothes in your wardrobe, may be made out of seasonal fabrics. Socks are available in merino wool, cotton and blends. Choose a fabric that looks appropriate for the weight and season of your slacks. Lighter cottons or blends are preferable with light-colored, summer-weight pants, while wools or slightly warmer fabrics are appropriate for winter pants.
