Easy Pattern Knit for a Rabbit Hat

Save

Knitting a hat is a simple task to master once you have figured out the basic knit stitches. If you want to transform that hat, you can do so by adding a variety of different hat toppers. From cords to flowers to ears, hat embellishments can turn one basic beanie pattern into a multitude of hat designs. Make a rabbit hat by knitting a beanie and adding long tapered ears to the top.

Knit the Hat

  • Knit a basic beanie hat using a stockinette stitch (knit every row when working in the round) and double-pointed or circular knitting needles. Decrease your stitches toward the top of the hat, and then thread an extra length of yarn through the remaining stitches and pull closed with a drawstring motion. Now your beanie is complete.

For a rabbit hat, knit your beanie in a bunny color, such as white, grey or brown.

Knit the Ears

  • For bunny ears, use your hat yarn to cast on a few stitches; the number you make will depend on the size of needles and the weight of yarn you're using for your project. In general, you should make your starting cast-on stitches about two inches wide. Knit straight for approximately two inches, then increase the next few rows until the ears are approximately 2-1/2 or 3 inches wide. Continue to knit straight, then decrease back to two inches for a few rows and decrease again until you have a pointed tip to your ears (one or two stitches left on the needles). Bind off, and repeat with a second ear.
When you make your increases for the ears, use the technique where you knit in the front and back of a stitch to create two stitches from one. This is preferable to the yarn-over increase for this project, because using a yarn-over creates a small hole in the fabric, which might look strange for rabbit ears.

Finishing the Hat

  • Cut two small pieces of pink felt in a size and shape that is slightly smaller than your rabbit ears. Sew them to the front of each ear, and then use a large eye blunt needle and a scrap length of yarn to stitch the ears onto the top of the hat. Now your rabbit hat is ready to wear.
