With the advent of the modern bathing suit, hair removal in the bikini area has become more common, with some women preferring waxing or electrolysis to completely remove hair at the root (epilation) to shaving, which only removes hair at the skin level (depilation). The Epilady epilator was first released in the 1980s and has grown in popularity as a tool that can quickly and easily remove hair from the bikini line.
How an Epilady works
An Epilady epilator is specifically designed to remove hair from a woman's body, with certain Epilady bikini trimmers (such as the Epilator Lady B, or the Bikini B) made specifically for the sensitive bikini area. Most Epilady products work by using a rotating head or series of tweezers to pluck hair from the body. Some Epilady products do not use the epilation technique at all, but are rather hair trimmers very similar to electric razors, except that they are smaller and easier to maneuver around the bikini line. The result of Epilady hair removal is to create a smooth, aesthetically pleasing surface around the bikini line.
Does it Hurt?
Epilation of hair, because it removes the complete hair follicle, creates a much smoother surface than simply shaving. However, sensitive areas such as the bikini line may experience significantly more pain during epilation than if it is attempted on other areas of the body. As one uses an Epilady more frequently, removing hair from the bikini line becomes much less painful and much less time-consuming. The trimmer products made specifically for the bikini line are not technically epilators, and will hurt no more than shaving---although the results may be visually less satisfying.
Does it Work
Epilady products do provide a very smooth surface, if you're willing to put up with the mild discomfort you may experience by using one. Moreover, Epilady products are durable and cost-effective, so you may get more use out of one over the course of its lifespan than you would from similar products, and you will save money on razor purchases. According to the Health Psychology Home Page at Vanderbilt University, some studies have demonstrated that epilators are nearly as effective as electrolysis (although further studies should be completed). Finally, Epilady products cut down on the time and effort spent shaving, making bikini hair removal quick and easy.
