Ways to Put Up Hair Without Clips

When you want to keep your hair out of your face, putting your hair in an updo using clips is a great way to achieve this. There are times, however, when your last clip breaks, you can't find one that works with the hairstyle you want, or the clip doesn't match what you want to wear. If you run into those situations, there are multiple ways to put your hair up without using clips at all.

    1. Hair Sticks

      • Gather your hair into a ponytail at a height of your choice on your head. It can be easier to get the hair into a position for a high bun if you flip your head over as though you're trying to reach or look at your toes. Smooth out lumps with your fingers or a comb, and then twist the ponytail until it starts to coil in on itself. Wrap the rest of the ponytail around the base of the ponytail and tuck the ends of your hair underneath the bun. Then insert the first stick, weaving it up and down through the bun so that it catches both hair in the bun and hair underneath it. Push the stick through the bun until there is at least an inch of the stick tip showing. Repeat with a second stick in the opposite direction for added security.

Create a more elegant, tighter bun by braiding your hair instead of using a ponytail. If you want, you can use this method for a ponytail that hangs down---just don't coil the entire length of the ponytail around the ponytail base; let what you don't wrap fall down around your shoulders.

      Scarves and Headbands

      • To put up your hair with a scarf, slip the scarf under your hair and then simply tie the scarf around your hair. Let the ends hang loose with the hair of the ponytail you create. You can wear this style up high on the head, low or even to one side. Another possibility is to use the same method, but just pulling back a little bit of hair from each side so that you only put some of your hair up.

      Just Hair

      • Bring your hair into a ponytail and twist just a few times. Then, using your dominant hand, grasp the end of the ponytail. Work the end of the ponytail up over the base of the ponytail and then down through the hair near the scalp. This may take a little practice. It's a little easier if a friend helps make a "hole" for the end of the ponytail to go through. Pull the hair down so it's a little more secure, and you're ready to go.
