Creating your own tanning lotion can be simple and easy with the right know-how and ingredients. When you read the labels of those pricey lotions that claim they're made up of nothing more than a few basic oils and ingredients, they're actually unknowingly telling you how to make them yourself.

Dabs of Oil

You'll need a few types of oil before you can start. Buy coconut oil, sesame oil and just a bit of peppermint oil as your main ingredients, as well as lanolin. Open up the blender and get your mixing spoons ready so that you can begin the blending process for the oils. To last you a few trips to the tanning bed, mix in 2 tbsp. coconut oil, 4 tbsp. sesame oil, 1/3 cup lanolin and 4 drops peppermint oil.

Turning on your blender at a low speed, mix all of the oils together so that they look blended rather than blotchy. Once they're properly mixed, you can pour them into a resealable container and stored for use within a week or so (the mixture can only be stored for about a week before the oils lose their effectiveness).

Applying Scents

As a way to add some scent to your skin, you can also pick up supplemental oils, such as jasmine or lavendar, that can be mixed into the lotion. Add no more than 4 drops to the mix (much like the peppermint oil). If you add more than 4 drops, it could have a detrimental effect on your skin and cause a rash.
