Most people are aware that human hair is often used to make wigs. But they might be surprised to discover there are other uses as well. For example, human hair can be used for gardening, to make art, or even to create a solar panel.
According to physorg.com, agricultural crops rely on compost materials to spur growth. Organic material, such as vegetables and animal waste, decompose over time. As this material decomposes, nutrients remain. Just like vegetables and animal waste, human hair also decomposes. According to a study conducted by Mississippi State University, when human hair is added to a compost pile, it makes an even more potent organic waste that will help plants grow even more. To gather hair that will add nutrients to your compost pile, simply save your own trimmings or ask hair salons or barber shops to save some for you.
People have been using human hair to create art for centuries. There are a few ways to do this. For instance, you could create a paint out of your own hair. To do so, save some hair clippings and use a mortar and pestle to grind the hair into a fine powder. Add the finely ground hair to a soft-colored paint (such as white or a beige) to create a unique color.
In addition, you can create necklaces and bracelets by weaving long strands of hair together. You can add accessories such as pewter charm pieces to complete your unique creations.
Other alternative uses of hair include using it to make a solar panel. In Nepal, a teenage boy replaced the silicon in a solar panel with hair---and the panel still functioned. The implications of this discovery could be very large in the future, considering the recent push for renewable sources of energy (and hair and solar power are definitely renewable). Hair has also been used on oil spills, although its effectiveness remains to be determined.
