Help With Dark Circles Under My Eyes

Dark circles under the eyes are a fact of life for millions of Americans. Also called eye bags or raccoon eyes, these dark circles can make you look tired, worn out and old. The skin under the eyes is the thinnest skin in the body, so in most cases the dark circles are simply blood vessels that can be seen through the skin. Typically, this is an inherited trait. However, there are a number of remedies for eliminating dark circles under your eyes.

Causes of Dark Eye Circles

  • To find out how to eliminate dark circles under your eyes, you have to find out why the circles are there. Dark circles can be caused by a lack of nutrients in the diet, including a lack of iron, also called anemia. Anemia is a sign that not enough oxygen is getting to the body tissues. Lack of iron can cause dark eye circles during pregnancy and menstruation.

Fatigue is another factor that can cause paleness of the skin. This paleness can cause a stark contrast to the circles under your eyes, allowing the blood underneath the skin to be more visible. Dark circles can become more noticeable as you age. This is because skin loses collagen and becomes more translucent as you age, making circles gradually appear darker.

Another reason for dark circles may be poor blood circulation or certain medications. Often cardio exercises can increase blood circulation and help reduce the dark circles.

Treating Dark Eye Circles

  • Maintaining a healthy diet with regular exercise can help decrease puffiness, increase blood circulation and reduce the appearance of dark circles under eyes. There are also a plethora of cosmetic products that help conceal the problem areas under the eyes. Use makeup that is matched to your skin tone and pat it gently under the eye to help reduce your dark circles.

Skin lighteners such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Hydroquinone bleach the skin to help it appear lighter. These can be toxic and sometimes may cause hyper pigmentation, so it is safest to use less intense lighteners such as vitamin C, mulberry and licorice to diminish darkness. An effective product for reducing dark circles is K Creme Plus, by Jason Natural Cosmetics. This product combines vitamin-K, which strengthens the capillaries and helps reduce swelling, horse chestnuts, chamomile, bromelain and Ester-C, a skin firming and brightening ingredient.

Another cosmetic trick is to dip black tea bags in boiling water, cool, and apply to your eyes for a few minutes. The tea extracts will help reduce swelling and inflammation. Additionally, cold compresses pressed to your eyes for a few minutes can help reduce puffiness and the appearance of dark circles.

And finally, stay out of the sun. Or at least use a strong sunscreen. The sun increases the level of melanin in your skin, drawing the melanin to the surface and making it darker. This, in turn, will darken those circles under your eyes.
