Home Remedy for Cracked Corners of the Mouth

Save

Cracks at the corners of the mouth is a common ailment that affects many people. The cause may be from conditions such as angular cheilitis (sometimes due to a nutritional deficiency), dehydration, too much sun or cold weather exposure, or from the effects of other allergens or irritants. Remedies can vary from person to person, depending on the cause.

Angular Cheilitis

  • The condition known as angular cheilitis causes cracks in the corners of the mouth due to nutritional deficiencies in iron, folate or B12, a fungal infection, or because of a bacterial infection that may be related to wearing dentures. The cracks can appear for varying amounts of time and can last anywhere from one to several months and may occasionally reappear. Keep the cracks as dry as possible to prevent bacteria and pus from developing and eat a balanced diet, especially including B vitamins. Rub the affected area with cocoa butter, aloe vera, vitamin E oil, unsalted butter, olive oil or salt first then olive oil and honey. However, consult your dermatologist or doctor before using any home remedy so that you do not counteract any medication that you may be taking.

Other Remedies

  • If lips or corners of the mouth are cracked due to other factors there are several remedies that can help alleviate the problem. Try not to lick your lips, as this further contributes to the dehydration and cracking. If you go out in extreme hot or cold weather be sure to use lip balm with sunscreen and reapply it often. Using a lip balm that contains beeswax or petroleum jelly is beneficial for moistening dry, cracked lips. It is also important to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Visit your doctor if cracked lips become extremely painful or if you experience chronic problems as it may indicate that you have an underlying medical condition.
