A knee cyst typically occurs in people with arthritis, with a cartilage tear or other knee joint problems. These conditions may cause excessive fluid in your knee to form which will lead to a Baker’s cyst. Although a knee cyst may cause discomfort and swelling it is best to treat the underlying condition that led to excessive fluid in your knee. Treating the underlying problem will aid in preventing a future recurrence.

A great home remedy is to follow the P.R.I.C.E principle. These letters represent protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation. When the pain worsen when your leg is extended you can use crutches to protect your leg and reduce this symptom. This will take the pressure from your weight off the knee joint so you can walk with fewer complications. Rest your knee as often as possible. Ice your knee to relieve inflammation. Ice will also aid in pain relief and reduce swelling. A compress wrapped around your knee will help keep your knee in place and aid in pain relief. Elevate your leg as much as possible, especially at night. Elevating your leg will also take pressure off your knee, promote healing and reduce irritation to the knee.

Ginger supplements should be added to your diet. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that will help to reduce inflammation and promote drainage in your knee. This herb has similar effects as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs. Take the recommended daily dosage of ginger supplements or drink a glass of ginger tea daily.

Boswellia serrata is an herb that also has anti-inflammatory benefits. This herb works to prevent the function of cytokines in the inflammatory cascade. Cytokines are the key cell signalers and pro-inflammatory moderators. This herb has been used as an anti-inflammatory treatment in Ayurvedic medicine for many years. Take this herb as a daily supplement or in the form of tea.
