Windows Live Email Problems

The cutover to Windows Live email services has not been smooth-outages, problems switching from Hotmail, among other things. The internet seems riddled with rumors as to what is wrong with this service. There are several suggested fixes to help you.

Outages

  • There is one major outage that can be found doing Internet research. In April of 2009, there was an MSN, Hotmail and Windows Live outage. Unfortunately, when you tried to sign in during this outage, you were told you did not have an account. This caused many people to believe their accounts had been deleted, and their email removed. Microsoft reassured that everyone's emails were safe, and the message everyone received was incorrect. That issue has long since been resolved.

Sign In Problems

  • Various boards have user reports of problems upgrading from Hotmail to Windows Live. Sign in problems have two possible answers. First answer is that the server your email account is located on is undergoing maintenance. This is where reading the error message will help you. Second answer is to optimize your browser to ensure it is not a browser issue.

Unable to Send/Receive Email

  • A few posts are out there regarding the inability to send or receive email after a successful login to the account. One of the answers is to uninstall and reinstall Windows Live services. Another answer is to optimize your browser. This would only apply if you are using a browser to access your email. The most common symptom for this is that you sign in, and then your browser freezes up.
