Natural Pain Relief for Cirrhosis of the Liver

Cirrhosis of the liver is a condition that is characterized by the scarring and inflammation associated with liver tissue that has been damaged. The liver attempts to regenerate its cells when it becomes damaged, and over time, scar tissue becomes abundant, liver function is impaired and cirrhosis sets in. This condition is often painful, but can sometimes be managed with natural remedies.

    1. Compresses

      • The use of hot and cold alternating compresses in cases of cirrhosis has proven to be invaluable. In people who suffer from cirrhosis, the pain of an inflamed liver can range from a dull, constant ache to a sharp stabbing pain. The act of treating the abdomen with alternating hot and cold compresses can bring about relief from the pain of cirrhosis and relieve swelling in some instances.

Start by using a hot compress such as a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and apply it to the affected area on the abdomen for about three minutes. After three minutes expire, remove the hot compress and add a cold one, such as an ice pack wrapped in a soft towel. Switch the hot and cold compresses back and forth until pain is relieved.

Relief may be temporary, but this method can be used as frequently as needed.

      Herbal and Natural Supplements

      • There are many herbal supplements that are thought to alleviate cirrhosis symptoms.

Papaya seeds have been shown to treat cirrhosis and bring relief of associated discomfort. The patient should grind the seeds using the back of a spoon to extract the liquid that is produced. The patient should consume 1 tbsp. of papaya-seed extract mixed with 10 drops of freshly squeezed lime juice twice per day for 30 days to experience relief of symptoms.

Another option is to consume the juices of the trailing eclipta, or eclipta alba, plant. The juice extracted from all parts of the plant (leaves, stem and roots) should be taken by the teaspoon three times a day. It can be mixed with honey to make it taste less bitter.

Picrorhiza kurroa is another plant used to treat cirrhosis. The root of the plant is ground into a powder and is mixed with honey and taken three times per day at 1 tbsp. of powder per dose. This herb is said to stimulate bile production in the liver, which can alleviate swelling and pain associated with cirrhosis.

      Daily Changes

      • If you consume alcohol, stop. The best thing you can do to alleviate cirrhosis of the liver caused by excessive alcohol consumption is to stop drinking alcohol altogether.

A well-balanced diet containing nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and milk can be helpful in alleviating cirrhosis pain as well. Abstain from processed, fried and canned foods. Organic produce is recommended as it does not contain chemical pesticides that are toxic to the liver. Your diet should be low in fat and refined carbohydrates.
