Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory steroid drug that is very effective in treating a wide variety of medical disorders. However, it can also be a complicated drug with many side effects. When Prednisone is prescribed, the benefits often outweigh the side effects and the severity of the side effects depends upon following dosing instructions.
Prednisone was first approved by the FDA in 1955 and was viewed as "miracle" drug. It is often used to treat such disorders as severe allergic reactions, asthma, arthritis, and flare ups with such conditions as Multiple Sclerosis, to name a few. The drug is intended for both short-term and long-term use but needs to be monitored by a physician.
Prednisone dosing can be done intra-venus (IV), by tablet or liquid. The IV dosing is usually done for more acute cases in the emergency room, while the tablet form of the medication is more common. The liquid form is usually taken by individuals who have a hard time swallowing pills. Prednisone tablets and liquid come in doses of 5 to 60mg and can be taken from one time a day to several times over the course of 24 hours. The dosing relies heavily on the condition and the severity of the symptoms. The side effects associated with Prednisone use increase as the dose is increased. Some of the side effects are moon face (roundness of the face), changes in mood, euphoria, insomnia, and increased appetite
The usual course for long-term Prednisone use is to utilize what is referred to as "alternate day therapy." This translates into dosing every other day to allow the body to rest and build upon its own immune system. One of the side effects of Prednisone is the depletion of the body's immune system.
If dosing is one time daily, and you forget to take your dose, then take the medication as soon as you remember. If dosing is several times a day, then take your Prednisone when you remember. If it is close to your next dose then double up on the amount. If the side effects become too uncomfortable, consult your physician immediately so that they can provide a dosing adjustment for you.
