No-Salt Homemade Ketchup

Just because you are trying to eat right and cut down on things like salt, high fructose corn syrup and preservatives doesn't mean you have to cut down on the good things in life, like ketchup. According to the Ketchup Advisory Board (a fictional board on "A Prairie Home Companion" and creation of humorist Garrison Keillor), ketchup contains those all-important "mellowing agents" that help make life easier, so you must have your ketchup. Make your own low-salt ketchup and be happy.

Collect the Ingredients

  • To make your no-salt ketchup, you'll need tomato paste, brown sugar, water, cider vinegar, dry mustard, cinnamon, cloves and allspice. Check the label on the tomato paste to make sure it contains no salt.

Combine Your Ingredients

  • Get a good-sized bowl, and add one 5 1/2-oz can of tomato paste, 1/4 cup brown sugar (make sure you pack it down), 1/4 cup water, 2 tbsp. cider vinegar, 1/2 tsp. each of dry mustard and cinnamon, and one pinch each of cloves and allspice. Stir everything with a spoon.

Savor Your Ketchup

  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Enjoy and eat it in good health. According to "Food Storage, How Long Can You Keep Ketchup," commercially made ketchup can last up to six months if refrigerated. Your ketchup could last up to that amount if kept in an airtight container. Discard the ketchup should the taste or texture change.
