Respiratory complaints can be particularly distressing for the afflicted. If you can't breathe properly, what else matters? Fewer things are more frightening than realizing you're not taking in enough oxygen. A number of common conditions that affect the ability to breathe: bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, flu and emphysema to name a few. Fortunately, a number of natural herbal remedies can be used to alleviate respiratory distress and improve the tone and condition of tissues that line the lungs and airways.

    Hyssop

  1. Hyssop is an old world remedy for respiratory distress and breathing disorders. This herb has antispasmodic properties, specifically on lung tissues, which can help to relieve chest congestion. In addition, hyssop acts as an expectorant, loosening and aiding in the expulsion of mucus and phlegm that may be accumulated along the respiratory tract. Hyssop tinctures can be purchased at health food stores or online. Different brands have various strengths. Be sure to take only the recommended dose as an unintentional overdose of hyssop can cause convulsions.

  3. Licorice root is a potent remedy for respiratory ailments. Useful for treating asthma and bronchitis, the chemical compounds found in licorice act as demulcent, creating a soothing film, which coats the linings of the throat alleviating minor pain and irritation of the membranes. Licorice also acts as an expectorant, thinning secretions, which may be causing breathing difficulties. As an added bonus, ingestion of licorice root bolsters the body's levels of interferon, a key component of the immune system and critical factor in the body's defense against viruses. Licorice root is available at most major drug stores and can be purchased as drops, in teabags or as capsules.
  4. Mullein Leaf

  5. In addition to licorice and hyssop, mullein leaf can also be used to improve respiratory health. Mullein has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which makes it very useful when treating a possible infection. In addition, mullein leaf contains compounds known as tannins which can ease the swelling of inflamed respiratory tissues, which can make breathing much easier for those who suffer from asthma or bronchitis. Mullein leaves also contain saponis, which can help to loosen thick secretions, making them easier to expectorate. It can be used alone or in conjunction with other herbs to for a combination of beneficial effects.
