If your bath or shower area is a little dark, consider installing a light fixture above. However, electricity and water don't mix well, and with all the steam and potential water splashes that a shower produces, choose a waterproof light fixture for this application.

Since bathrooms often have low ceilings, particularly in the shower area, recessed fixtures can be an ideal lighting choice. However, since they are contained, recessed fixtures often max out at 40-watt incandescent bulbs, so you must use fluorescent bulbs for brighter light.
Purchase a waterproof trim for your recessed fixture to keep water out of the casing. These trims are available in glass or stainless steel, as well as other materials. Before installing a recessed fixture above your shower, confirm that you have enough space and available wiring. Some fixtures need around 8 inches above the surface of the ceiling to accommodate the casing.

If there is already a light fixture installed in your shower but you are concerned that water or steam could be penetrating it, take the time to waterproof the fixture yourself. Purchase a tube of silicone caulk and load it into a caulking gun. Carefully seal around the outer edge of the fixture, and don't touch the caulk to avoid breaking the seal. Allow it to dry at least 24 hours or as recommended by the product manufacturer before using your shower.

For an unconventional and environmentally-friendly approach to lighting your shower, consider purchasing an LED-powered shower head. When the water is cool, the light shines blue, However, once the water heats up, the LEDs turn red. No electrical power source is needed as it is powered by an internal turbine. The glow it emits lights up the entire shower, so you don't even need to turn your bathroom light on, which provides a more gentle transition for those who aren't morning people.
