Cost to Replace Airbags

by Larry Amon

Airbags help save countless lives every year. The cost of this technology is well worth the value they bring to any car, but the price of replacement airbags does significantly add to the repair bills of cars that get into accidents. The very high cost could lead to cars being totaled early by insurance companies as the cars age and the cost to replace the airbags becomes prohibitive.

Airbag Cost

The cost to replace an airbag in your car depends on several factors. The specific model of your car and they type of airbag used will affect the cost. There are also different airbags in your car, including the driver's, passenger's and side and curtain airbags (in some cars). The cost of the airbag is going to average around $300 to $500 (2009 prices).

Additional Costs

Replacing an airbag consists of replacing more than just the airbag itself. Often, sensors, springs and other pieces must be replaced. There is also a labor cost involved--replacing an airbag is not something to be done by the backyard mechanic. The total cost of replacing an airbag can be well over $1,000, and in some cars the replacement cost can be as much as $3,000 to $4,000.
