Kidney stones, also called renal calculi, are an extremely painful condition in which minerals form stones in your kidneys or bladder. Scientists found remnants of kidney stones in a 7000-year-old Egyptian mummy, evidence that these stones have been plaguing mankind for 1000’s of years. Passing a kidney stone out of your body through your urinary tract is one of the most painful processes you may ever have to endure. It is best to try to prevent them or dissolve them. For centuries, people have come up with home remedies to prevent or get rid of them.
Kidney stones are usually crystallized calcium, oxalates, uric acid or phosphate that comes from the foods we eat. Most people contain a chemical in their bodies that prevent stones from forming, but in some people this chemical is absent or not working, according to the National Kidney Information Clearing House.
Lemon Juice and Olive Oil
Drink the most popular homemade remedy for dissolving kidney stones, a combination of lemon juice and olive oil. This combination is supposed to soften up and break down the stones. Mix 2 ounces of olive oil and 2 ounces of lemon juice. Drink it straight down and follow it with a large glass of water when you think you might be getting a stone. Drink this mixture once a day until your stone goes away.
Drink a variation of the lemon and olive remedy such as vinegar and olive oil, lime juice and coconut oil, or apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. You can mix what ever quantities of each to make it similar to the lemon juice and olive oil mixture.
Another variation of the olive oil and lemon remedy is to make a tea; steep ¼ teaspoon dried parsley in 1 cup boiling water for 2 minutes. Add, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon olive oil. You should drink this everyday for one week if you feel you have a stone.
Add cucumber slices to your water or make a homemade vegetable juice with cucumbers. Drink cucumber juice regularly to help your body rid itself of the excess uric acid that may build up causing a stone to form. With a juicer, juice cucumbers, carrots and any other type of vegetable (avoiding those rich in oxalates) that you enjoy and make a juice that you can drink everyday. This home remedy should prevent and dissolve stones before they get too large.
Drink lots of water--2 to 3 quarts (up to a gallon, if you are able) a day is highly recommended when someone is prone to kidney stones. Kidney stones occur more frequently when your urine becomes highly concentrated due to heavy perspiration or not enough fluid intake.
If a doctor tests your urine and finds it high in oxalates he may ask you to stop eating food high in oxalates such as spinach, rhubarb, beets, wheat germ, peanuts, chocolate and sweet potatoes. In addition, limit your intake of vitamins high in calcium. Limit dietary medications with vitamin D, such as antacids. Eat a healthier diet limiting red meat, sugary foods, coffee and acid-forming foods.
