The United States National Arboretum offers an online presence packed with interesting and useful information for the gardening enthusiast (see Reference 1). They offer many unusual activities to visitors. Although a trip to Washington, D.C., may be beyond your budget, the Friends of the National Arboretum organization offers memberships with benefits that would please a gardener and make a suitable gift (see Reference 2). The sites also offer gifts available for ordering online. However, many unique gifts for gardeners may be found in local stores with a little effort and creativity.

    Books, DVDs

  1. Purchase a unique book or video for the gardener. Self-help gardening books exist in a broad range of topics from those for the novice to beautiful hard-cover editions. Many titles exist as DVD editions as well and offer a range of topics from vintage tips and recipes to modern-day gardening architecture. Garden photography books offer photos of historical and unique gardens around the world. For a gardener with children, locate a child's picture book about a garden or gardener. Purchase a book and DVD, add a flower motif mug and a package of flavored teas, then include them in a decorative wicker basket for a unique gardener's gift.
  2. Themed Accessories

  3. Use your gardener's favorite theme around which to build a fun gift basket. For example, if your gardener enjoys ladybugs or old-fashioned implements, select a variety of useful and decorative items to include in the basket that incorporate these designs. For the gardener's personal use, choose a pair of decorative gloves, an apron or T-shirt, knee pads, garden clogs, sunglasses and a hat that incorporate the favored design. Also, include some decorative garden accessories such as a birdhouse, wind chime, stepping-stone or clay pot set. Place together in a large, heavy-duty outdoor basket for a gardener's gift basket.
  4. Unique Specimens

  5. Research a type of garden plant, then purchase a few specimens for the gardener to plant. Garden plants might include those for cooking such as herbs, for eating such as fruits, or unique specimens. You might research plants used historically for medicinal purposes, then purchase a book and a few specimens as a unique gardener's gift. You might also research plants that attract wildlife and purchase those along with a book about the particular wildlife they attract. If the gardener enjoys the work of artist Claude Monet, research the types of plants he used in his famous Giverny gardens and purchase some specimens as a gift for the gardener. Gardeners will appreciate the thought and time put into unique gardening gifts.
