Get an empty box. This can be a shoe box, an old jewelry box with the insides removed, a hat box, a cigar box, or an unfinished wooden box from a craft store. Wooden boxes are ideal because they are sturdy and easy to decorate. Plastic boxes can also be used, but they can be difficult to paint. Cardboard boxes are easy to paint and decorate but are not as sturdy.
Decide how you want to decorate your box. There are many different craft techniques you can use. Make it as ornate or as simple you want. All that matters is that you take some care decorating your God box in a way that is special and meaningful to you. -
Spray your box with a spray primer. Allow the primer to dry. Paint the box a base color with acrylic craft paints. Choose a color that has meaning to you.
Paint designs on your box, such as inspirational words or religious symbols. Use stencils to trace designs with pencils and paint them. If you feel secure in your artistic abilities, you may wish to paint it freehand. Let God be your inspiration. -
Use decoupage techniques to cover the outside of your box. Select some images from old magazines, catalogs or greeting cards, or print out some images on your computer. These can be inspirational words, religious symbols or images from nature such as flowers and animals. Resize them, if necessary, to fit on your box.
Cut out the images and lay them on the box where you want them to go. Brush the back of the image with a decoupage medium and lay it on the box. Continue layering images. You can overlap them or leave spaces between them. Brush the medium over the images to ensure they are securely pasted down.
When the decoupage medium dries, spray the outside of the box with a clear acrylic spray sealer. -
Choose a fabric that you like and feel is appropriate. Lay the box on top of the fabric and fold the fabric over the box. Cut the fabric to be slightly larger than the box.
Brush white craft glue onto the box. Press the fabric onto the craft glue. Fold the fabric over the edges of the box and glue it on the inside. Do this with both the bottom of the box and the cover. Use scissor, if necessary, to trim away bulky corners.
Allow the glue to dry. Use a hot glue gun, if desired, to add decorative trim such as fringe, ribbon, braided rope or fabric appliques. -
After decorating your box, use felt to line the inside. Cut the felt to fit each of the inner sides and the bottom, then glue it on with white craft glue.
Say a prayer over your box when you have finished it. Ask for blessings on the box and for it to be a sacred tool that you can use to communicate with God.
