Urinary incontinence can be treated without medications or surgeries. Physical therapy techniques, along with herbal remedies, may help cure the socially embarrassing problem. But always discuss the condition with your doctor before trying a natural or herbal treatment.

  1. Bladder Training

    • If your incontinence is caused by a sudden urge to urinate that gives you no time to get to a bathroom, you may benefit from bladder training. Start by waiting five or 10 minutes from the time you feel the urge till the time you go to the bathroom. You can gradually increase this time to three or four hours. While you are in the bathroom, make sure that you empty your bladder completely. Some people experience frequent urges to urinate because their bladders are never emptied.
These efforts will take some work, but eventually you will develop greater control over your bladder and the urge to urinate.

    Exercises

    • Increase the strength of your pelvic muscles with kegel exercises. The muscles used for these exercises are the same ones that you use to stop your urine flow. Once you have identified the muscles to use, contract and hold them for about four or five seconds. Repeat the muscle contraction 10 to 20 times for one set. Do 10 sets daily.
Increased control over these muscles may help with stress incontinence. This occurs when urine leaks during a cough or sneeze. Both men and women can benefit from these exercises.

    Herbs

    • Use herbs as a natural diuretic to ensure that your bladder is completely emptied. Bacteria and infections can cause a frequent urge to urinate. Some herbs that can be used as a diuretic for incontinence are buchu, cornsilk and horsetail.
Other herbs that have an antiseptic property and may be able to help with urinary incontinence are marshmallow, cleavers and usnea.
Use these herbs in a tea.
All herbal treatments should be done under the guidance of your doctor or a trained herbalist. Herbal treatments may interfere with prescribed medications you are using for other conditions.
