Home Remedy for Itching on the Lower Legs and Ankles

Many people suffer from itchy skin, particularly on the lower legs and ankles. This uncomfortable skin condition may be caused by various things. When over-the-counter creams and prescription medications don’t work you can turn to some very effective home remedies.

Baking Soda

Baking soda has been in use for many years to reduce itching and swelling, as well as treating such conditions as bee stings. Another positive is that baking soda is readily available and inexpensive. Add 1 cup of baking soda to a tub of warm water and soak your lower legs and feet in the mixture for 30 to 60 minutes, then allow the skin to air dry. For more localized itches, a paste can be made by mixing three parts baking soda with one part water. Apply the paste to itchy skin, though it should not be used if the skin is broken.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is an effective treatment for burns and sunburns, as well as in reducing itches. Simply snap off a leaf from an aloe vera plant and slice it down the center. Rub the gel on itchy skin and allow it to soak in. If you don't have an aloe vera plant you can buy the gel for about $7 or $8 in the pharmacy section of many stores.

Stinging Nettle

If you touch a stinging nettle plant it will cause a fiery red rash that stings. But ironically it is very effective for treating allergies and skin rashes when it is consumed as a tea or taken in supplement form. It can be found in ether of these varieties a health food stores. Taking just two a day will help an individual get rid of a skin rash.
