Keep rugs and carpets clean by encouraging family members to take off their shoes at the door. This will limit the amount of dirt and debris tracked into the home. If you choose to wear shoes indoors, invest in heavy-duty doormats to provide family and guests an area to wipe off moisture or dirt from outside.
Vacuuming is one of the leading defenses for keeping rugs and carpets clean; it prevents dirt from being ground into the fiber pile. Try to vacuum high-traffic areas daily or twice a week at minimum. -
Deep rug cleaning does not have to be a regular occurrence, but the better maintained rugs are, the less cleaning will be necessary involved. To loosen up dust in smaller rugs, go outside to shake them out and then vacuum them. Treat any stains with commercial stain removal products, just as you would with carpet.
Take larger area rugs outside and shampoo with either a rented steam cleaner from the grocery store or one you have bought. Shampoo the rug with water and cleaning solution, and then lay it flat so that it can dry without any folds or creases. After a few hours, flip the rug over to that it can dry from the backside to prevent any possible color bleeding onto indoor carpet. Vacuum the rug once again when it is dry to give it a soft feel.
