If you have old cooking pans covered with nonstick treatments, such as Teflon, you need to dispose of them in an environmentally safe and responsible manner. The materials used to coat the pans can be toxic if simply tossed into the garbage and sent to a landfill. If you have treated cookware and aren't sure what kinds of materials were used to make it, call the manufacturer to ask before disposing of the item. All major manufacturers are listed online and have contact information on their websites.

    Local Disposal

  1. Call the local waste removal company or local government to ask for the date and location of their next Household Hazardous Waste collection day and drop-off spot. Take your treated pans to the collection for disposal of with other hazardous waste.
  2. Company Buyback

  3. Call Calphalon (1-800-809-PANS (7267)) if your pans are manufactured by that company. Calphalon takes back old treated cookwear items for responsible recycling. Other companies offer similar programs for taking back old or damaged treated pans.
  4. Making a Statement

  5. Send treated pans back to the original manufacturer if you want to make a statement about your rejection of dangerous treatments used in cookware. Annie B. Bond of Care2.com suggests including a note reading, "Enough is enough, stop with non-stick chemicals already. Quit harming humans and the world at large."
