After rust and other deterioration have taken their toll, you will have to replace any unsightly old wood trim on the outside of your home. While that may sound like a major undertaking, you can do it yourself---with some guidance---over just a few weekends. If you can work on this project for more than a few hours on the weekend and devote some time during the week, you can finish even sooner.

    Know Your Limits

  1. In doing a project of this magnitude, don't hesitate to accept help, particularly when using ladders and doing heavy lifting. You can even turn your project into a building party and invite friends over to help, promising a free meal to thank them.

Knowing your limits also means realistically assessing your budget before you begin. Make sure you can purchase all colors, when applicable, at one time. Weigh your options about putting wood trim up as the replacement or going with another material that wears better. Either way, you can make this project an accomplishment to add to your list of feats in a very little amount of time.
  2. Replace or Repair?

  3. Replacing wood trim inside your home doesn't necessarily mean you have to rip out miles of it and replace it with new trim or another product. Sometimes, you can repair existing trim and restore it to a like-new condition. Sometimes, small trim, like molding, can simply be replaced because it is relatively inexpensive.

If you have an older home, you may be able to remove ornate, high-quality natural wood trim, sand it down, repair the problem and restore the trim to a beautiful luster. Take care to remove wood trim according to its particular type and observe the condition of the trim beneath.
  4. Damaged Trim Doesn't Spell Disaster

  5. If it's obvious your wood trim has damage everywhere and will have to be replaced, remember to be gentle to the wall beneath the trim so that it is not damaged. Even when you are replacing a large amount of trim, you can increase your savings by taking accurate measurements so that you buy only the trim you need.
