Considering that most accidents happen in or around the home, home safety is an important issue. You can never be too careful, especially if you have children. There are many simple things you can do to make your home safer for you and your family.

    House Fires

  1. Each floor of your house should have a working smoke detector and they need to be tested monthly. Place smoke detectors near potential fire hazards, such as large appliances. Also put a smoke detector near the bedrooms where they will wake you in the event of a fire.

A fire extinguisher is an excellent, life-saving tool to keep in your home. Place it near the middle of the house and be sure the entire family knows where it is and how to use it.
  2. Baby Proofing

  3. If you have small children, extra steps need to be taken in your home to ensure their safety. Keep all chemicals, like cleaning agents, in a secure cabinet that can not be opened by your children.

Purchase small inexpensive outlet covers to prevent things from being stuck in them.

Keep anything with small parts or pieces out of the reach of your children.

Use Baby gates to keep your children out of, or in, certain rooms of the house.

Never leave a small child unattended.
  4. Home Security

  5. The best home security measure is having a dog. Research has shown that most burglars will avoid a house with a barking dog inside.

Motion sensor lights outside the house and lights set to a timer inside the house will help prevent break-ins while you are way from home.

Electronic security systems will alert authorities in the event of a break-in, fire or any other emergency at your house.
  6. Outdoor Safety

  7. If you have a pool or hot tub, install a fence around it to keep small children from falling in and possibly drowning. Never leave children unattended in or near a pool or hot tub.

When using a grill or barbecue, keep it a safe distance away from the house and any structures, like a garage or shed.

Install motion sensors on your garage door to stop it from closing if someone crosses through the doorway while it is coming down.
  8. Natural Disasters

  9. Keep a well-stocked emergency kit in your house for storms and power outages. Kits should include a first-aid kit, nonperishable food, water, battery powered radio, flashlights, candles, lighter, small supply of cash, medication and pet-care items.
