The school curriculum for primary grade students usually has an art class included. Experts say that art class allows the children to be creative, and to develop an appreciation for art in general. For primary grades, art class is usually taught in an arts and crafts kind of way. Students can celebrate the holidays by doing arts and crafts activities that incorporate holiday themes.

    Valentine's Day Art Activities

  1. There are many creative art activities for Valentine's Day and some are so easy that very young children can do them with a little help. You can have your students create heart lollipops for someone special. These make yummy gifts. All you need are some construction paper hearts, lollipops, tape and a marker. You tape a lollipop to a heart and write a message on the back of the heart. If you wanted, you could even add two green paper leaves onto the lollipop stick to make it look like a heart-shaped flower.

You could also have your students make tissue paper flowers. To do this art activity, you need tissue paper and green or brown pipe cleaner. Stack four to six pieces of 8-by-8-inch squared pieces of tissue paper on top of each other. Fold the stack like an accordion, then wrap one end of a pipe cleaner around the middle of the tissue paper. Open up the tissue paper and you watch your flower bloom.
  2. Easter Art Activities

  3. Decorating eggs is a classic art activity for primary grade students. You will need to boil some eggs in a pot of water on the stove. The eggs need to set in the water anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on how many eggs are in the pot of water. Once the eggs have cooled, you can decorate them with Easter egg dye, paint or markers.

Another Easter art activity is fingerprint chicks. Lightly paint each student's fingers with yellow paint and have them make finger prints on a piece of white card stock. Use black and orange markers to add eyes, a beak and feet to the thumbprint. Students can glue Easter grass on the bottom of the paper and cotton balls for clouds.
  4. Halloween Art Activities

  5. Halloween is an exciting holiday for kids and there are numerous activities you can do with your students at Halloween. Let your students make a ghost painting. They can paint the bottom of their feet with white paint and make a footprint on a piece of black paper. With the toes facing down, add eyes and a mouth with a black marker.

Another fun Halloween activity is making a jack-o'-lantern mask. Purchase orange paper plates at the store and cut out eye holes using a straight edge knife. Let students glue on a nose and a mouth and add hair and accessories to the mask. Use a hole punch to punch a hole at each side of the mask and tie pieces of yarn through each hole.
  6. Christmas Art Activities

  7. The art activities you do at Christmas time can be used as gifts for students to give their loved ones. Painting Christmas ornaments is an excellent art activity for the primary grades. Purchase several glass ornaments, some brushes, stained glass paint and stencils to begin. Help students paint a Christmas ornament of their own to take home to a loved one.

Another Christmas art activity is to make a hand print Christmas tree. Trace each student's hands on a piece of green construction paper, and have them cut out the hand shapes. Use the hand shapes from the entire class to create a giant Christmas tree, allowing the fingers to point down toward the ground. The hands will overlap slightly and should create the traditional, triangle shaped Christmas tree.
