Design Ideas with an Ikea Storage Cube
Ikea hacks--modifications of Ikea products to meet individual needs--are all over the Internet. Ikea products tend to lend themselves to modification, due to the simple nature of many of the pieces. The Ikea Hol Storage Cube is a table made of walnut, with a gridlike surface on the sides and top. It comes in two sizes. One is a cube and the other is a rectangle.

Electronics Storage
-
The gridlike design of the Hol storage cube makes it great for storing electronics that need ventilation so that they don't become overheated. Go beyond just placing a single device in the cube. Group cords, power strips and routers and attach them to the walls of the cube with electric ties. If necessary, cut a hole in the bottom of the cube to provide more openings for wires and cords.
Creating a Cabinet
-
Lay the cube on its side to create a cabinet. Add magnet closures to keep the door closed, now that gravity is working against it. Add a drawer handle to make it easier to open. Consider stacking a few units to create a taller structure. Each unit should be attached to the one below it to make sure that the structure is stable.
Wood Burning
-
Although you can paint the cube to change its look, for more originality, use a wood-burning tool to create interesting designs and scrollwork on your Hol storage cube. Draw your designs on first with a pen or a pencil. Even if you have little by way of an artistic side, geometric designs are easy to make with the aid of a ruler, which doubles as a straightedge. Free-hand curves and swirls can help break up the blocklike look of the table.
