Atrophic vaginitis is a condition that can occur at any time in women, although it is commonly found in those who are in or approaching menopause. It is caused when the estrogen in a woman decreases. The result is a thinning of the vaginal walls, as well as increased dryness. Although lubrication can help the dryness, the thinning walls can result in tears. There are some alternative remedies that can help with atrophic vaginitis.

    Suppositories

  1. Inserting a suppository derived from Vitamin A or E can help lubricate and soothe the inside of the vagina. Other herbal suppositories that can help are made from the herbs dioscorea and calendula. These suppositories can be found in some herbal stores, or obtained through your doctor.
  2. Tea Tree Oil

  3. Tea tree oil can be bought online or at an herbal store, and can be used to treat atrophic vaginitis. Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant that is native to Australia. Tea tree oil suppositories can be bought, or can be made at home. To make your own, mix 1/3 of the tea tree oil to 2/3 of Vitamin E oil into a gel capsule. These are then inserted vaginally.
  4. Soy Products

  5. Soy products can help women who are experiencing symptoms of atrophic vaginitis. The phytoestrogens that are in the products work for a woman's estrogen levels by increasing them. Soy products include tofu, soy milk and soybeans.
  6. Yogurt

  7. The bacteria known as lactobacillus acidophilus is a friendly type that is found in the vagina. It helps to maintain a healthy vagina because it prevents more harmful bacteria from growing and developing, acting as a natural antibiotic. Eating yogurt that contains this bacteria can help restore the balance within the vagina and helps aid in the fight against harmful growth.
  8. Lifestyle Changes

  9. The types of perfume and lubricants a woman uses can irritate the vagina. Stopping the use of douches, spermicides, perfumes, body washes and soaps can help to reduce the pain and discomfort associated with vaginitis.

Drinking a lot of water is recommended, as is avoiding the consumption of caffeine and alcohol. Eating a healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, organic foods, soy products and healthy fats is also recommended.
