Water damage can cause a number of issues such as the growth of mold, staining, and the weakening of mattress materials. While flood damaged mattresses, including those that become mostly submerged in water, often can not be repaired; mattresses that get rained on can usually be dried and reused. The key to attempting to dry a wet mattress is to begin the drying process as soon as possible.

    Initial Drying

  1. Remove any sheets, mattress pads or covers. Wipe down the mattress with a large rag or cloth. If possible, place the mattress outside in the sun to dry. If you cannot place the mattress outside, place the mattress in a room with enough space that you can prop the mattress up on its side. Place fans on both sides of the mattress to help it dry quickly. It is best to begin the initial drying within 24 hours of exposure to rain.
  2. Disinfecting

  3. Wipe off any dirt or dust. Mix together one part rubbing alcohol and one part water in a bucket. Soak a large rag in the mixture and squeeze out the excess liquid. Wipe the entire mattress down with the solution, remembering to get all of the sides. If the rag becomes too dry, dip it back into the cleaning solution.
  4. Final drying

  5. Place the mattress back outside or propped up in your home. Place fans around the mattress and allow the mattress to fully dry. The fans will help to dry the mattress more quickly. Put a new mattress cover or pad onto the mattress.
  6. Problems

  7. Consider disposing of a mattress that has been soaked due to flooding or an extended amount of time in the rain. Water can get deep inside the mattress and cause damage to the springs, frame and padding. Mold can begin growing shortly after exposure to water. Even if the surface looks dry and clean, the inside of the mattress may not be.
