To begin making this carrier, picture a cross shape. The dish sits on a square or rectangle of fabric in the middle. One set of flaps folds over the top of the dish to cover it. The second set of flaps comes up along the sides and are attached to fabric carrying handles.
Begin by cutting two strips of double-sided quilted fabric. The first strip will be as wide as your dish and three times as long as the dish. For example, if your dish is 10-by-15 inches, the first strip will be 10-by-45 inches. The second strip will be the length of your dish one way and three times the width of the dish the other way. For the 10-by-15-inch example, the second strip is 15-by-30 inches. As a second example, for an 8-by-8 inch dish, you would cut two 8-by-24-inch strips.
Cut two strips of fabric to make the handles. The strips should be two inches wide and as long as your dish. For the first example, each handle piece is 2-by-15 inches. In the second example, each handle is 2-by-8 inches. -
Finish the raw edges of the rectangular strips and the handles by sewing double-faced bias tape around all four edges of each piece. A narrow zigzag stitch works well to secure the bias tape and ensure that you catch both sides of the tape while sewing it on.
Lay the first strip crosswise on top of the second strip, making sure the strips are centered. The center now has a doubled base of fabric. This is where your dish will be when it is in the finished carrier. Place the dish here before proceeding. Now fold the flaps of the first strip that extend beyond the dish up and over the top of the dish, lapping one side over the other. Sew Velcro fasteners near each end of the strip to keep the flaps secure.
Sew the handles to the top edges of the second strip, positioning the handles so they are parallel to the top edge of the strip and the ends of the handles are one to two inches away from the side edges of the strip. Be sure to attach securely.
