Plan a top-secret party complete with mystery games your young detectives or special agents will love. Boy and girls ages 6 to 12 might enjoy some mystery games you can set up for free. With a little planning and a few props and supplies, your guests will have a great time being actively involved in solving mysteries and winning prizes.

    Who Am I?

  1. Who Am I? is a mystery game that can be played as part of a theme party. Simply choose characters or real people who fit into the party theme and write their names on adhesive labels. Place one on the back of each guest as he arrives. A guest can give another guest one clue about the name on the second guest's back. At an assigned time, each guest tries to name her mystery person. This can also be done with locations, inventions, animals and many more topics.
  2. Hunts

  3. Guests can go on scavenger hunts for a mystery activity. Hide shapes cut from construction paper all over the party space and give the clue for the next letter on the back of the previous letter. After guests have collected all the letters, they should spell out something like "Go to the back porch," where the kids will find food, cake and more party games waiting.

Another idea is to place photos inside and outside for clues to the next activity. For example, guests can collect photos of wood, flames, matches, sticks, marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers to find out that the next activity is making s'mores.
  4. Sardines

  5. One mystery game is called Sardines. Guests choose a partner, and one pair go to hide. Every few minutes, another pair take off to find the first pair. The final pair are the stalkers. Guests must hunt for the original pair in their hiding spot while avoiding the stalkers. If they find the hiding pair, they must squeeze into the hiding spot with them. If the stalkers find them first, they are out and go back to the starting point.
  6. Mystery Package

  7. To play Mystery Package, take an unusually shaped object and wrap it in many layers of fabric, newspaper or wrapping paper. Guests pass the package around while music is played. When the music stops, the person holding the package can unwrap one layer and try to guess what the item is. The winner is the first one to guess correctly or take the last layer of paper off the package.
  8. Flashlight Tag

  9. When it gets dark outside, arm each of your guests with a flashlight. Guests chase each other around trees, outside furniture and buildings. When a guest is caught in a flashlight beam, he is out and must return to a designated spot until the last survivor wins. Play as many times as your guests like. Alternatively, everyone hides and only one person is the detective with the flashlight. Guests can run for the base when they feel safe. The last person caught becomes the new detective.
